Make sure to score those last-minute necessities before 6 p.m. today
Houston-area locations of grocery store HEB will close early on Wednesday as the city braces for the arrival of Hurricane Laura.
After operating during normal business hours on Tuesday, the chain will close its stores in Houston at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26. It’s still unclear where exactly Hurricane Laura will make landfall along the Gulf Coast, but Houstonians have been in preparation mode for the storm all week long, stocking up on essentials like bottled water and canned goods.
Outside of the Houston area, many HEB stores along the Gulf Coast closed early on Tuesday night, including locations in Mont Belvieu, Baytown, Port Arthur, and Beaumont.
As Texas Monthly reported earlier this year, HEB has developed an extensive disaster preparedness protocol over the years, heroically delivering truckloads of drinking water to Beaumont in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and implementing a slew of precautions to stem the spread of COVID-19 while keeping the shelves stocked since the onset of the pandemic. According to HEB president Craig Boyan, the chain is in a “year-round state of preparedness” for emergencies like hurricanes.
Houston’s HEB stores will reopen “as soon as it is deemed safe,” after closing on Wednesday night, possibly as early as Thursday, August 27.
