The food hall’s owners cited mandatory shutdowns and COVID-19 as the reason behind the closure

After barely more than a year in Houston, ambitious Rice Village food hall Politan Row has permanently closed its doors.

The food hall announced its departure in a post to Instagram on Friday, citing mandatory restaurant shutdowns due to COVID-19 as the reason behind the closure. “We’ve been closed due to the pandemic much longer than we were actually open. This timing has been tough, especially for a group of small business owners,” the Instagram post reads. “Politan Row Houston will unfortunately close its doors, but we want to encourage and support all the food and beverage entrepreneurs that are pressing on.”

The past few weeks had been tenuous for Politan Row, with multiple one-day closures throughout November and the relocation of recent pop-up events like JQ’s Tex-Mex, which planned to serve its birria tacos there over the weekend before an impromptu move to Fluff Bake Bar.

Opened in November 2019, Politan Row promised an upscale, locally focused take on the food hall from the minds behind New Orleans’s legendary St. Roch Market. It housed spots like Peruvian-Japanese eatery Pacha Nikkei, chef Victoria Elizondo’s popular Cochinita and Co, and Breaking Bao.

No word on where the spots displaced from Politan Row will open just yet — stay tuned for more details.
