Beyoncé name-drops Pappadeaux in British Vogue interview

Houston native Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has never been shy about advocating for her favorite Bayou City eateries, and in a new interview with British Vogue she adds another spot to the list. In the mostly-glowing profile from the magazine’s November issue, writer Edward Enninful asked Bey about her favorite Texan delicacy.

“Wow. That’s tough to pick one favorite. It’s good eating in Texas!,” Beyoncé told the publication. “I love Cajun seafood at Pappadeaux. The barbecue in Texas is mmmm. So is the Mexican food and the soul food. We ate soul food every Sunday after church. There was nothing better than when a little bit of candied yams got on your oxtail and macaroni.”

The mention could be a big boost for the Pappas family of restaurants, which has been hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic. In June, the company announced it was closing five restaurants in Houston, including a Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen at 2410 Richmond Avenue.

Fat Cat Creamery opens second location in Garden Oaks

Fat Cat Creamery, the beloved Heights ice cream shop, has opened a second location at The Stomping Grounds at Garden Oaks. The new location includes a second floor which will serve as a production space, allowing Fat Cat to expand its capacity of small-batch, made from scratch ice creams. The second location will also allow Fat Cat to serve five new flavors, including Whiskey Butter Pecan, a seasonal flavor made with Yellow Rose Distilling whiskey, which will now be available year-round. Fat Cat will celebrate the second location’s grand opening on Saturday, November 14, with 14 flavors of ice cream and complimentary cocktails from Galveston’s Daiquiri Time Out.

Heights boutique hotel has a new pool bar in the works

The minds behind swanky Downtown rum bar High & Dry have a new project in the works in the North Heights. Toucan’s Swim Club will be located in the courtyard of the new Heights House Hotel at 100 W Cavalcade Street, and will include cocktails from Levi Tatum and Wes Bray, who opened High & Dry in 2018, alongside a menu developed by Cherry Block Butcher chef Jessica Timmons, according to Houstonia Magazine. The bar and grill will offer both indoor and outdoor areas, including poolside cabanas and loungers. The Heights House Hotel is a new retro-chic revap of what was formerly the Astro Inn, just off Cavalcade and I-45. Toucan’s Swim Club is expected to open by the end of 2020.
